WINDY!

There is no other way to describe the race experience that we had on Sunday morning.

In fact, I now have a small idea of what it is like to swim in the ocean. And I didn’t like it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been in the ocean before. But not doing the kind of swimming that you do for a triathlon. The kind of swimming that you do when you are more just splashing around in the water.

I’ve also done some boggy boarding, but the object there is to stay on top of the waves.

That was not the case on Sunday morning.

The wind was coming across the lake from the far side of where we were for the swim part of the triathlon. So by the time the wind and waves made it to where we were they had built up quite a bit of momentum.

We don’t have an official measurement or anything, but several of us figured that the waves were at least three feet or better at times. And they were toss us around like nothing which made for a very interesting swim.

It also made for a very interesting bike ride as well.

At one point when we were fighting a cross wind from our left; I noticed that everyone in front of me had their bikes leaning seriously to the left. Once I took a look at my orientation I realized that I was doing the same thing. That was a bit of an odd feeling.

Although it was a bit of a brutal race, overall my timing wasn’t too bad. I finished with an official time of 1:43:10.

Oh yeah, and hats off to Running Away Multi-sports for the coolest goodie bag yet; the bag itself. Each one of us got a transition backpack that is actually big enough to hold all my transition gear for the race. Awesome!

Later,
John W.
