In For a Penny…

In for a pound!

I’ve been quiet over the last few weeks (and for that I apologize) because life has been getting in the way of things, including training at times. Although I have still managed to get in as much as I could during that time, since I have decided to continue on with this journey which brings me to the title of this post.

When I first started this whole thing I told Shelly that it was either going to be one and done, or if I liked it, then I was in for the long hall.

And so I’m giving myself 5 years to climb to the top of the triathlon mountain, so to speak.

You see, I kind of feel like a commercial since I’m 45 doing my first tri.

So I figure, since I like this whole craziness, why not stay with it and really make it interesting by committing to do an Ironman when I’m 50.

Now I alluded to the Ironman idea back in the beginning of the blog. But it was more of a distant idea at the time since I wasn’t sure how this whole thing was going to pan out after my first real race.

For one thing, the whole idea about the swim was intimidating as all hell to me in the beginning. Shelly can attest to this, as we were talking about it before I even got back in the water for the first time I was visibly sick about it. But I knew that I used to be able to swim with no problem, so I figured I had to get back in the water and try.

Well I got over that, although those demons did come back the morning before the Tri’ing for Children’s race. But I finished that swim and since then I have been focusing on getting more open water swimming experience.

Now all I have to do is keep training and work on increasing my endurance. Drastically increasing my endurance is more like it. But I figure one step at a time with more sprint distances and continually working my way up to the Ironman distance.

So the next step for me is the Devils Challenge which brings me full circle to where this whole journey first started.

More on that next week.

Later,
John W.
